Project Complete
The Van Buren Bridge Project concluded in July 2018. The bridge is now open to all traffic - including vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian.
The new bridge has a pedestrian walkway and improved access to the W&OD Trail and the Benjamin Banneker Park in Arlington County. Stay tuned for an official announcement and pictures of the completed project.

Project Location and Detours
N. Van Buren St. will be closed to traffic between 19th St. N in Arlington County and E. Columbia St.
Northbound vehicular traffic will be routed down E Columbia St. to N Roosevelt St. and 19th St. N. Southbound vehicular traffic will be routed down 19th St. N to N Sycamore St. and 16th St.
Bicycle and pedestrian traffic will be detoured along an existing bridge on the W&OD Trail within Benjamin Banneker Park.
Project Scope
The Van Buren Bridge project will replace the existing Van Buren Bridge to accommodate pedestrians along this corridor to the East Falls Church Metro. The current bridge has no pedestrian access and has been identified as “structurally deficient” during its annual inspection. The new bridge will accommodate two lanes of vehicular traffic and have a 12' pedestrian walkway on the downstream side.
This project is funded through the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, State of Good Repair, and the Virginia Department of Transportation's Revenue Sharing program.
