North West Street and Great Falls Street Traffic Signal Improvements
The intersection of North West Street and Great Falls Street was identified as one of four City intersections needing improvements as part of the application process for Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) FY 15 Revenue Sharing funds. The main reason these were identified for upgrades was to remove signal heads and span wires from Dominion Virginia Power (DVP) utility poles. City Council approved this project as part of the FY 2015-2019 CIP under the Traffic Signals Infrastructure Program.
$300,000 VDOT Revenue Sharing grant funds and $300,000 local funds
Design: Summer 2016
ROW Acquisition: Fall 2017
Construction: Spring 2018
Work at this intersection will include removal of existing signal heads from DVP poles and installation of new signal equipment, including mast arms, pedestrian signals, and a signal cabinet. This project will improve pedestrian accessibility by updating the pedestrian signal timing and providing ADA compliant push buttons, ADA compliant ramps, and curb extensions to shorten pedestrian crossing distances. The intersection will be milled and repaved, and new signage and pavement markings will be installed.
Fairfax County is currently designing a project that will install new sidewalks along Great Falls Street and North West Street between Great Falls Street and Brilyn Place. The City of Falls Church is collaborating with Fairfax County since the scopes of the two projects overlap. This collaboration will allow both projects to be designed concurrently, minimizing conflicts and streamlining the review process.
The community is encouraged to attend public meetings to learn more about the project and share concerns. Opportunities to do so are listed below:
