Dog Laws

Rabies License Tag
Dogs over 4 months of age must be licensed annually and vaccinated against rabies. City dog license tags will be sold only upon presentation of a certificate showing the dog to be currently vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian. Dog tags cost $5 for spayed / neutered animals and $10 for fertile animals. To obtain a $5 license, certification must be provided to show that the animal has been spayed or neutered by a veterinarian or is infertile. Licenses can be purchased at the office of the city Treasurer.

More information about obtaining a license can be found in the Treasurer's department.

Leash Laws
All dogs when off their owner's property must be secured by a dependable leash and controlled by a responsible handler. All dogs must have their city dog license securely attached to a collar and it must be worn at all times when the animal is off the owner's property. It is against the law to allow your dog to run loose on public property or the private property of others.

Public Property
It is also against the law to allow your dog to run loose on city school grounds, city parks, and privately owned areas such as cemeteries. Falls Church city does not currently have areas designated where dogs can run freely. It is against the law for any owner, keeper, or walker of a dog to allow a dog to leave excrement on property other than his own.

Barking & Nuisance Animals
It is against the law to allow an animal to continually make noise (i.e., barking dogs) that is objectionable or irritating to other parties.
