August 2019 UPDATE: A limited amount of leaf mulch is available at the back of the Recycling Center (217 Gordon Rd) for self-loading (bring your own tools and containers) while supplies last.
Leaf Mulch Processing
Free Mulch Pickup (while supplies last)
The City of Falls Church offers free double-ground leaf mulch and hard-wood mulch to City residents, non-residents, and business owners. Those interested may stop by the Recycling Center between 7 a.m. and dusk, 7 days a week with their own containers, shovels, or pitchforks to haul away the mulch. The center is located at 217 Gordon Road, Falls Church, VA 22046.
Self loading starts each year in late February or early March and is available until the supply runs out, typically May or June.
The leaf mulch is the end-product of 5,000 cubic yards of leaves vacuumed from city streets in the autumn. Removing and recycling the leaves into mulch provides a far more cost-effective solution than hauling and disposing of them. This practice also benefits the environment; leaf mulch naturally:
Turns clay-rich soil into nutrient-rich soil, making it healthier for trees and plants
Releases water into the soil at a slow rate
Creates zero waste in the process
Self-Haul & Contracted Services
Every year, free double-ground leaf mulch is available for pickup at the Recycling Center, starting in late March, near the Don Beyer Volvo at the intersection of Shreve Road and Route 7. The Recycling Center is open 7 a.m. to dusk, 7 days a week.
Bring your own container and tools for loading mulch. You may hire someone to load and/or haul mulch for you.
Contractors may not bring heavy equipment into the Recycling Center (no loaders or dump trucks, please).
You do not need to be a City of Falls Church resident or business to pick up free mulch.
For comparison, if you received mulch delivery in the past, each truckload held approximately 5 cubic yards. A large pick up truck will hold approximately 1.5 cubic yards of mulch.
