Environmental Volunteer Opportunities

Below are the city volunteer opportunities that will get you outdoors in nature! Please go to the city's calendar for times and locations of each event.

Community Clean-Up Events (Spring and Fall)


Join in the fun to make the city beautiful! In the spring and fall, volunteers work together to clean up the city. Volunteers meet at the Community Center, are organized into teams, and assigned to work areas throughout the city. City staff distributes trash pickers, trash bags, recycling bags, gloves, and reflective vests. Perfect for community groups (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.), church groups, families, or individuals.

Neighborhood Tree Program Mulching Event


Join neighborhood volunteer to place mulch around trees.

Farmers Market Food Waste Collection Station Help


Are you passionate about sustainability and composting, love interacting with the public, and enjoy motivating others to make a change?  The City is looking for volunteer assistance to support the weekly food waste collection/compost station at the Farmers Market! Duties include setup/breakdown and supporting compost education efforts.

Habitat Restoration & Invasive Weed Removal


Join the City of Falls Church Habitat Restoration Team in restoring the local ecosystem in City parks. This includes on-going removal of invasive vegetation and replanting with native species when plants are available. Various dates throughout the year.

Neighborhood Tree Planting Program


Join your neighbors to plant trees around the City.

    Recycling Extravaganza & Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Onsite Help


    Onsite help is needed for the twice-a-year Recycling Extravaganza! Help the Public Works Department sort clothing, inventory bikes, direct traffic, and more.

    • Family-friendly; children must be at least 10 years old
    • Outdoor, 2 hour shifts
    • Wear comfortable clothes (pants are recommended) and don't forget the sunglasses and sunscreen
