VDOT's W&OD Trail Bridge Project

By Susan Finarelli, Office of Communications

At the June 12 City Council meeting, a representative from VDOT will share information about a new W&OD trail bridge over Route 29/Lee Highway, which is N. Washington Street in the City. The bridge will be near the intersection of Lee Highway and Fairfax Drive, completely in Arlington County.

While this project won't be within the City limits, it will certainly serve as a landmark and gateway feature on the border of the City and Arlington County. The bridge will also increase safety for W&OD Trail users.

City staff has worked collaboratively with VDOT, Arlington County, and NOVA Parks on the design of these projects. To guide review of these projects, City staff developed the following principles:

  • Urban Design – Design creates a gateway with appropriate scale and materials
  • Metro Station Access -- Design accommodates multiple options for multimodal access to the future western entrance of the East Falls Church Metro Station
  • Streetscape – Design accommodates street and sidewalk sections that are consistent with adopted planning documents
  • At-grade Access – Design maintains or improves at-grade pedestrian access and connectivity

Here are renderings of a possible overpass, presented by VDOT. Please note these renderings are conceptual only and design details are subject to change.

VDOT will hold an Open House about the bridge on Tuesday, June 13 at 6 p.m. at Yorktown High School (5200 Yorktown Blvd, Arlington). This will be the final workshop before awarding the design-build contract.

Updated meeting materials and a presentation are expected at the City Council meeting on Monday. In the meantime, you can learn more about the project via this VDOT workshop presentation from May 2.
