MRSPL has been named one of "America's Star Libraries" in The Library Journal Index of Library Service 2020, which rates libraries nationally based on collection, programming, and use statistics.

Mary Riley Styles Public Library has been named one of "America's Star Libraries" by Library Journal in its annual Index of Public Library Service. MRSPL is one of only 4 public libraries in Virginia (and only 262 nationally) to receive this rating, which is based on an analysis of per capita collection, program, and use statistics from 5,608 public libraries across the country. This marks the 12th time MRSPL has received a star rating since the index was introduced in 2008.
Statistics reviewed by Library Journal in its ratings include:
- Circulation of Physical Materials
- Circulation of Electronic Materials
- Library Visits
- Program Attendance
- Total Internet Computer Use
- Public Wi-Fi- Sessions
- Electronic Retrieval (of articles and other resources)
MRSPL was awarded 4 stars (out of a possible 3, 4, and 5 stars) and was one of only 30 libraries nationally to earn stars in its budget range ($1M-$4.9M).
