Renewing Materials

All items are renewable 2 times (with some exceptions, listed below).

Renewal due dates are calculated from the date of the renewal. 

Automatic Renewals

Starting November 1st, the library will begin automatically renewing all eligible materials on the day they are due.

Items may not be automatically renewed if:
  • The material has already been renewed twice
  • The material is on reserve for another patron
  • The library account in question has over $10.00 in fines
  • The item is part of our eCollection
Renewal notifications will be sent to patrons via their preferred notification method which may include information about items that were not eligible for renewal. 

Renewing Online

You can renew items online through our library catalog. To log into your account, simply enter your MRSPL card number and your 10-digit phone number (or personalized password, if you have set one) where prompted in the upper right of the catalog's main page.

NOTE: All account passwords in our new catalog system (which launched June 21, 2017) have been reset to the 10-digit primary telephone number listed in your account. Once logged into your account, you can, if you wish, set a secure personalized password for your account. Please contact the library if you have questions about your account or password.

Renewing by Text

If you have listed your cell phone as one of your contact numbers in your account, at any time (24/7) you can text the following commands to 703-520-2484

  • Renew due: Renews any items due in the next few days
  • Renew all: Renews ALL items on an account
  • Summary: Sends you a privacy redacted summary of what is currently out and when it is due
You also have the option in your account to set up an automatic text reminder for items before they are due. The text commands above can also be used to respond to these automatic reminders.

Renewing by Phone

You can also renew by phone by calling the telephone renewal line at 703-248-5175 (24 hours a day). Leave a message with as much information as possible. Please include the following: 

  • Your name (please spell your last name!)
  • Your library card bar code number
  • The barcode numbers of the items you wish to renew
  • Your phone number (in case we need to alert you to issues with the renewal)

Renewal Restrictions

You will not be able to renew (either online, by text, or by phone) any items that:
  • Have been placed on hold by another patron
  • Have been renewed twice already
