Rates and Billing

The City of Falls Church operates and maintains the sewer system. As a cost-saving measure and convenience for our customers, Fairfax Water provides sewer billing service for the city, which is why your sanitary sewer fees are included with your water bill.

Availability and Service Charges

Effective July 1, 2016, as per the City Code:
  • The first bill a customer receives shall include an advance quarterly use charge of $18.50.
  • The sewer charge as determined by the appropriate method noted in the City Code shall be $10.17 per 1,000 gallons of water billed.
  • A fixed charge of $6.00  for quarterly customers and $2.00 for monthly customers shall be included in each bill.

Non-Metered Services

Single-family residences are billed on the basis of per capita average of similar users. All others are billed according to the number of fixtures at the service address.

Billing for Residential Customers
To verify if your property is in the City of Falls Church sanitary sewer system please use the Sanitary Sewer Account Lookup Tool.

For residential customers, sewer usage is based on winter-quarter water consumption or the actual water consumption during the current billing period, whichever is lower. This prevents residential customers from being charged sewer rates on water used outdoors during the warmer months, because it does not drain to the sanitary sewer system.

The City of Falls Church prorates this amount on initial and final bills based on average winter-quarter consumption.

Billing for Commercial Customers

Commercial customers' sewer use is based on actual water consumption. Some commercial customers use meters to separately measure water that does not drain to the sanitary sewer system, such as water used for irrigation or cooling systems.
